Flannan Isles Lighthouse – artwork by Margaret Maclean
The Flannan Isles are located off the west coast of the Isle of Lewis.
The biggest one of the islands, Eilean Mhòr, had been subject to a lot of mystery stories around the disappearance of three lighthouse keepers.
Around Christmas time in 1899/1900 there was really bad weather. A ship went past and noticed that the light was off at the lighthouse. When the ship went to the next harbour, they sent word up to the lighthouse station. But because the weather was so horrible, it was the beginning of the New Year that they finally made it to the island. And when they arrived there was no sign of the three lighthouse keepers. By the looks of it everything looked totally normal, apart from the three men missing.
Nobody knew what had happened and why they had disappeared. The most likely explanation is that the saw a big wave building up on the sea and rolling towards the island. So they went to the pier to secure everything. But they wave was faster, hit the island and took the three men to their cold grave.
